City Center People Mover, Station Fabric Canopies

The people mover stations at City Center, designed by Gensler, anchor a monorail line that connects the various hotels and retail centers of City Center Las Vegas. The canopies at the two stations gently stretch over the platforms 120 above the ground and give a sense of floating lightness.

The PTFE tensioned fabric is stretched over a series of arched trusses. The trusses are suspended in the air via cables that also anchor them down against uplift to the station floor slab edges. The masts hold the entire structure aloft and extend beyond the surface of the fabric to allow the cables enough of an angle to keep the reaction forces low and be efficient structural elements.

The detailing of the connections allows for on site tensioning of the PTFE membrane that is pre fabricated off site and assemmbled and tensioned in place. The fabric is panelized for ease of fabrication, shipping and installation and stitched together via clamp bars, on site, to form a continuous weather tight membrane surface.
