Orlando Intl. Airport Monumental Skylights

The OIA satellite D Monumental Skylights are designed with supporting structural cable trusses spanning between a primary structure giant steel truss system. The three identical skylights are identical and lay out at a 120 degree angle in relation to each other to form a 360 degree view to the skies. HOK’s aviation team worked with the design build company to develop the aesthetic of the system that uses the pilkington planar’s point supported insulated glass system.

The cable truss is a built with custom pre-tensioned stainless steel cables and masts to form a fish truss shape with glass fin spreaders that span between the trusses to form tertiary supports for the glazing. The truss system was pre assembled in the shop and shipped to site and lifted into place and pinned to the roof truss with final tensioning in the field.
